"Beaverlodge Community Centre 1946-1977" Watercolor Pencil and Pen
The Beaverlodge Community Centre was was officially opened May 14, 1946 with an open air dance at which Doug McFarlane’s orchestra played. It became the social centre of the town and area. A large building, it was located where the current Town Hall and Library now sit. It contained a theatre, concession (best popcorn ever!) and coffee shop, dance hall, Elks and Legion rooms, library, rifle range, and crafts centre.
The demolition of the building in 1977 was heartbreaking for the community. The cost of fire insurance had become unaffordable and the cost to update the building was prohibitive. Engineers recommended it be demolished. Many still mourn the loss of this incredible facility.
